Massage Therapy. Overview
Massage was one of the earliest tools that people used to try to relieve pain. Nowadays, Massage Therapy is used to help manage a health condition or amplify wellness. It involves manipulating the soft tissues of the body and trigger points.
Studies of Massage Therapy for several types of pain, including low-back pain, neck and shoulder pain, pain from osteoarthritis of the knee, and headaches, showed the efficacy of this hands-on method in managing pain.
Research by psychologists at the University of Konstanz observed higher psychological and physiological relaxation levels in people after only ten minutes of receiving a massage. The findings, reported on 8 September 2020 in the journal Scientific Reports, provide the first indication that short-term treatments can robustly reduce stress psychologically and physiologically.
Several types of massage focus on different parts of the body or a healing approach. Let’s review 4 types of massage therapy and see which type might be right for you.
1. Deep Tissue Massage
It can be a full-body massage, or the massage therapist may focus on the body parts that need the most attention.
Your massage therapist will use deep finger pressure and gentle strokes to relieve tension from the deepest layers of your muscles and connective tissues.
Deep tissue massage is suitable for:
- Chronic muscle problems, such as soreness, injury, or imbalance
- Relieving tight muscles, chronic muscle pain, and anxiety
2. Sport Massage
It can be a full-body massage, or the massage therapist may focus on the body parts that need the most attention. Depending on your needs, your massage therapist may rotate deep pressure with soothing strokes.
It’s a good option for:
- An injury from repetitive muscle use
- Improving flexibility and sports performance, and reduce the risk of injury
- Relieving pain, anxiety, and muscle tension
3. Trigger Point Massage
This type of massage is focusing on relieving trigger points and reducing pain. Sometimes, tightness in the muscle tissues, known as trigger points, can cause pain in other parts of the body.
Your massage therapist will use broad, flowing strokes that are gentle and relaxing combined with more robust, deeper pressure. It can be a full-body massage, though your therapist will focus on specific areas of your body that need to be released.
It is suitable for:
- Managing chronic pain
- Injuries, chronic pain, or a specific issue or condition
